The sun starts popping up in the eastern sky, the birds start singing, the squirrels are running up and down the tree trunks and another hot muggy day is beginning. The thirty to forty minute routine is about to start for the three thousand one hundred and twenty sixth time. The Brisk Walk is as much a part of me as breathing, eating, and sleeping. It is a habit. It is an addiction. I just do it and have never missed a day since June 12, 2006, My Medicare annual physical was last week and all is cool. I am in better shape now than sixty-one years ago when drafted into the U.S. Army.
I was a fat kid. As an adult my weight went up and down like a yo- yo. I made New Year resolutions and broke them before February every year. Then on June 12, 2006 I started walking. Today the brisk walk is for about two miles and takes about forty minutes from start to finish. Anything under 20 minutes a mile works for me.
I ask questions and listen to athletes and military with special training and call my findings WAFOWASL. Those who do what I do have less strokes, heart problems, dementia, Alzheimer’s, type 2 sugar diabetes, cancer, and have all around better health than those who do not walk briskly.
Last week it was early and already warm. About 30 junior and senior high boys and girls showed up at my favorite walking place. Not an obese one in the bunch, and all had good looking running shoes and a bottle of water. There was not a sugar drink anywhere. Saturday I saw about 100 folks age 35 and under at a Cross Fit gym. They came from all over East Texas to do wild and crazy workouts and running. They were a big time competition. There is a transformation away from a nation that accepts sickness, illness, and chronic disease as a way of life. The new breed is living a healthy life. They are addicted to WAFOWASL.
OK do I have your attention? WAFOWASL.
Drink more WATER. The athletes work up to the formula of taking their weight, dividing it by two, and drink that many ounces a day and more. Everyone needs a bunch of water every day to whoosh, shush, and flush those innards. I have not had indigestion, hemorrhoids, or heartburn in three years and have had no sugar drinks. You can have the same results.
Eat good FOOD. Fresh or fast frozen fruits and veggies are getting on the shelves more often. Only two cereals are really healthy, and the rest are loaded with too much sugar. Shredded wheat and oats can be doctored with almond milk, nuts and frozen or fresh fruit. Those tigers and cartoons on the boxes are not making our kids healthy. Eat at least five fresh fruits and veggies and eat four or more times a day.
WALK briskly every day. Start off with four or five minutes and work up to 30 or forty minutes. Your heart will love you.
SLEEP like a baby for seven or more hours every day. A tired and stressed out body needs to be recharged.
WAFOWASL is the medicine of the 21st century.
