THE WATCHMAN: Separating politics, the American Flag and the National Anthem
Isaiah 62:6 ~ I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence…
In this article and the next I am going to be dealing with the U.S. Flag and the National Anthem i.e. taking a knee, standing or kneeling, a tad on football players, and America’s Team.
There is such a swirl of opinions as people tuning in to every sporting event to see whether their favorite team is going to take a knee, stand, or kneel during the presentation of the American Flag and the playing or singing of the National Anthem. Some players are taking a knee, some are standing (locking arm in arm) and some are just standing with their hand over their heart. Many of us that love our favorite teams are disgusted and dismayed that this has become so politicized. I for one, watch my favorite team as a form of relaxation and escaping from the stress of the workday week. Now unfortunately, it has become stressful, and the game has taken a back seat to the politics and opinions expressed all over social media.
Both my wife and I have decided to stop watching any sporting event until this gets smoothed out by the NFL, NBA, etc. Good heavens, even little children’s teams are being affected by this upheaval.
I have no problem with someone standing for their rights peacefully, but I do believe there is a proper place to voice these concerns and the football stadium is not one of them. The owners of these teams pay upwards of $2 million average, per player and have the final say as to what actions their employees engage in on the field or on the sidelines. In the corporate world, if I would have refused to wear the proper uniform on my job, I would have been fired. That is nothing compared to what is going on now.
The link below will show how one should stand, what one should do, and the proper way to respect the flag and those who have served our country and paid the price for our freedoms. You will notice on the link, Conduct During Playing of National Anthem, there is no mention of “taking a knee.”
Congress, in 1942, wrote a law on the National Anthem and presenting the American Flag. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed this into law in 1942, as to the proper conduct when the National Anthem is sung and the presentation of the American Flag. This link shows what one is supposed to do!
On Saturday, September 30, 2017 Fox News showed the response of eight Moms’ reactions to members of the NFL kneeling before games. What I observed was very interesting. One of the Moms was Dr. Jeanine Downie, a professor at Indiana University Health – Dermatologist. She made a statement that she thinks that Kaepernick is a hero. She explains that Kaepernick, the ex-San Francisco 49’ers Quarterback, some of the Giants, and Jets players are also taking a knee against racial inequality and police brutality. Of course, she mentioned the Flag Code, and that it doesn’t say anything about taking a knee.
Dr. Downie should look at the NFL Flag Code. In her mind kneeling shows the intent and spirit to equalize, and that is the platform.
When Kaepernick first began his on-field protest, he made mention primarily of police brutality against people of color, primarily black Americans and oppression of the same.
What has transpired since he first began, has created some question in the validity and honesty of his protests. Kaepernick wore socks on the field, which implicates policemen as pigs. He also wore a shirt that depicted a picture of Fidel Castro, President of Cuba. Fidel Castro was a communist and the ultimate oppressor of his people. People have been trying to escape his regime for decades to flee the oppression. Going across ocean waters in small boats took the lives of many hundreds of Cubans. Both make a loud statement as to where Mr. Kaepernick’s heart lies, and it honestly doesn’t seem to be with the U.S.
In my next article, I will delve further into this topic of racial inequality and police brutality and who is really America’s Team.
