Gina Cantrell Announces Candidacy for Van Zandt County Treasurer
Gina Cantrell has decided to throw her hat into the ring for Van Zandt County (VZC) Treasurer. She is running in the Republican Primary, which is set for March 6, 2018. Having worked both in the medical field as an X-ray technician, and also in bookkeeping within the Dallas Independent School District (DISD), as Business Office Manager, and the Kaufman County Clerk’s Office, she feels uniquely qualified to handle daily operations of the Van Zandt County Treasurer’s Office.
Cantrell worked within the Collections Department of the Kaufman County Clerk’s Court Division for four years, and said of VZC, “I know there needs to be a change in office procedures.”
Currently, Cantrell is the Office Manager at the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) of VZC, where she started last summer as a volunteer bookkeeper. She is now paid staff. The Advocacy Center helps children who have gone through sexual abuse.
While serving at CAC, Cantrell has applied for and been awarded two grants: 1) TVEC granted CAC $3,000 for the Therapy Department and 2) Texas Mutual awarded $1,500 for a building security system. Cantrell is applying for another TVEC grant to provide for more security needs.
Cantrell revealed why she is seeking public office. “I like dealing with people.” She said that the Treasurer’s Office is normally closed for lunch between noon and one o’clock. However, “That’s when so many people have time off to come to the office to do their business.” If elected, Cantrell promises, “I would have the office open from 12-1.” She also assured that she would work with other County offices in a cooperative manner, for the benefit of the County, adding that regardless of personal differences, “I’m professional enough to work with you.”
Married 43 years, Gina and her husband Owen, have three children, six grandchildren, and one great grandchild. A woman of faith, Gina has spent much of her walk in the Baptist Church, and she worked the 2006-2007 school year with Terrell Christian Academy. She looks forward to the next chapter in her life, serving the People of Van Zandt County, whether in the Treasurer’s Office, or at the CAC.
