New Canton City Council Members Sworn and Scholarships Awarded to Students
Last month the Canton City Council swore in three new city council members. Cindi Malouf (returning Councilwoman), Andrew Vaughn, and Daniel Deibert were sworn in on May 15, 2018. The council members were sworn in at a 5:45 p.m., so they could be present for the City Council Meeting that started at 6:00 p.m. Only three people applied to run for the three open seats on the City Council, so there was no contest. Andrew Vaughn and Daniel Deibert replaced Scott Perkins and Shawn Stewart. Shawn served on the council for six years (2012-2018) and was the City’s Mayor Pro Tem. Nathan Moore has been appointed the new Mayor Pro Tem.
First, the Council awarded the National Honor Society Students from Fruitvale for their work at the Canton Animal Shelter. The NHS members include: Katelyn Crabb, McKenzie Hunt, Laney Rush, and Lexus Teague. Katelyn Crabb and Laney Rush were present to accept this award. Laney will be a Senior this coming year, and she has been in cheerleading four years now. Katelyn will also be a Senior this coming year, and she is an officer in Future Farmers of America (FFA), and she shows pigs.
The Annual Sanitation Solutions Scholarship was awarded to Jeremy Dickerson and Riley Nicks of Canton High School. They both recently graduated this year, and Riley graduated as this year’s Valedictorian. He also performed in the Mighty Eagle Band, and qualified as a State Soloist.
Jeremy was apart of the Current Issues and Events team, and they qualified for State. He is also a part of FFA and he is on the Farm Business Management Team.
Cheyenne Collard was awarded the First Monday Scholarship. She was an officer in the FFA and was this year’s Miss Canton High School. She also received the Student of the Year Award at the Chamber of Commerce Banquet.
Kylee Crist received the Rayford Hutcherson Memorial Scholarship. Kylee got accepted into Texas A&M University’s Honors Program. She was active on the lifting team, and was part of the color guard.
All the parents of these children are very proud and they all have very bright futures. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and that you continue in good deeds. To the new Council members: may you continue to make Canton a profitable and great community in which to reside.
