Early Voting in Kaufman Special Election Has Begun
Early voting has begun in Kaufman County for the Special Election called to determine the contest between current Judge Dennis Jones and Tracy Booker Gray for the County Court at Law No. 1 race. The two candidates were separated by one vote in the Republican Primary Election and remained divided by one vote after a recount. The Gray Campaign filed suit that led Visiting Judge Marty Lowy to call a Special Election for Kaufman County Court at Law No. 1 to be held July 21, 2018.
From a previous story, published by The Northeast Texan, Lowy, a Democrat, determined in the suit, that there were Provisional Ballots during the Republican Primary Election that should possibly have been counted, despite the Texas Secretary of State’s (SOS) ruling that those Provisional Voters were not truly registered to vote.
Further, Lowy determined that a March 30, 2018 federal case ruling, based on the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), or “Motor Voter Act,” sets the precedent for his ruling pronounced Friday, April 13 in Kaufman.
