H&R Block Takes Up Donations for The ABC Room
On Monday December 17, 2018 H&R Block in Canton, Texas took up donations for Van Zandt County’s ABC Room from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In light of the giving spirit, H&R Block gave back to the community by collecting donations that will be used at the ABC Room.
It is important to realize what the ABC Room is and what they do for the community. The name of this program tells us much about what they do. Van Zandt decided upon those three particular letters because they wanted a title that signified who they serve. When you see ABC you instantly think of school age children, kindergarteners in particular. ABC is the acronym for, A Better Childhood.
This highly respected program has unwavering support in the community. Businesses like H&R Block, who raise money for the needs of the children, help bring hope. The goal is that an abused, neglected, or at-risk child in Van Zandt County will have A Better Childhood.
State funding does not allow for basic needs to be bought for a child that has been taken from a home. Basic needs include clothes, a blanket, personal hygiene items, and a backpack to carry their personal items in. For this reason, the community supports places like The ABC Room, that try to meet these needs.
Sharon Stehsel and the late Karen Forester have been on a mission since 2001. They formed a Community Partners group, and together with the Greater Texas Community Partners, made the ABC Room exactly what it is today. As a result, these two women have made a difference in Van Zandt County. They ensure that products and services are available to each child in need.
What is the ABC Room?
The ABC Room is an in-house emergency resource center. The mission is to distribute new items as mentioned above (clothes, blankets, personal hygiene items, and a backpack) to caseworkers and investigators.
The Van Zandt County Community partners with The Children’s Advocacy Center, The Welfare Board, and CPS Caseworkers, to ensure that the ABC Room is stocked with everything a child from newborn to 18 years old would need in an emergency situation.
The community, together with businesses like H&R Block, help keep the ABC Room stocked up on things a child might need. This is the season to have a giving heart and what better organization to give to, than the ABC Room.
