HCMGA Plant Sale on Saturday
Over 5,000 plants will be offered at Henderson County Master Gardener Association’s annual Plant Sale on Saturday, April 27, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Senior Citizens Center, 3344 Hwy 31E, Athens, TX. The sale will be held inside, so come rain or shine.
There is nothing that makes a gardener’s heart leap with joy more than the words “Plant Sale”. Every gardener needs new plants, whether you have a new garden, an established landscape, or grow vegetables.
Vegetables and Herbs:
Tomato plants, peppers (both bell and jalapeno), squash, and strawberries will be offered. Choose from large beefsteak-type tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, or trailing tomatoes. Basil, chamomile, dill, fennel, oregano, parsley, sage, and thyme are just a few of the herbs available. Save a lot of money by drying them yourself to use in cooking. Place cat mint, lavender, lemon balm and rosemary between other plants in your garden.
Plants for Butterflies:
Do you want to attract butterflies? Add black-eyed Susans, blanket flowers, butterfly bushes, coneflowers, fall asters, heleniums, lantanas, milkweeds, salvias or passion flower vines. These and many more butterfly-attracting plants will be available. Hummingbirds will flock to Turks cap. Both the red and pink-flowering varieties will be for sale.
Are you adding some prairie-style plantings to your garden? Pick from several grasses, such as Mexican feather grass, silver feather grass, and the sweet blue-eyed grass. Between grasses, fill in with blooming perennials. Blazing star, coreopsis, mullein, and yuccas will add color and texture.
Pass-along plants, usually hard to find in the nursery trade, will be available. Choose crinum, datura, night-blooming cereus, oxblood lily, or walking iris.
Is your landscape full, but you just need some annuals for pots or filling in spaces? Angelonia, begonias, coleus, gomphrena, Mexican heather, petunia, and sweet potato vines are just a few you may wish to consider.
Unusual Plants for Sale:
If you are looking for something unusual, you may want to pick up a beefstake plant, blackberry lily, firecracker flower, rootbeer plant, or sea holly.
Moondflower vines will light up a moon garden, ferns will fill in shady areas, and lamb’s ear is perfect for a children’s garden. These are just a small sampling of the plants offered. You will be sure to find something that will fit your needs at the Henderson County Master Gardener Plant Sale.
